Posh title: Postgraduate Researcher in Respiratory Disease. Not so posh title: PhD student and Snot Scientist!
I am currently working towards my PhD studying the problems mucus causes in diseases like Asthma and Cystic Fibrosis. We all make mucus, it keeps our airways sterile and is vital for our health...and we want to know why too much mucus with strange properties can be fatal?? I work in a small team of 6 other snot scientists, within a lab of about 25 people all together. We work both on our own and together to try and solve some of the mysteries of respiratory and other diseases.

Someone who has an interest in what goes wrong in diseases and someone who likes to discover new things...with the aim of helping people improve their quality of life. Can be frustrating when things don't work, but when they do, job satisfaction is second-to-none! Need self-motivation, good manual skills and a desire to learn new things and meet loads of different people.

Qualifications neededQualifications needed:
To get into medical research of any kind, generally what you will need are good science GCSEs and A-levels, followed by a degree in one aspect of medical science...could be Biomedical Science like I did...a bit of everything for those who aren't sure what are to specialise in, or more specific, like genetics, biochemistry, microbiology. All will teach you the skills you need to pursue research careers.
