last one this year... |
|
Ok, it is so cold here in Holland it is like a winter wonderland! I need to develop some new extra warmth materials for times like these - it makes you realise how important clothes really are - imagine walking around naked at this time of year?? ouch!
Off home to the UK for some Christmas party fun....more blogs to come in the new year. |

New life |
|
I can’t believe that it is nearly a year ago that I last blogged! Where has that time gone? So much has happened in the last year – I won’t bore you with all the details.
The big thing that has changed in my life is that I have gone from student to fully fledged employee! I now live and work in Holland and life is much different. It has been as much of a shock to go from university to corporate world as it was to move from UK culture to Dutch culture.
I am also now officially a Doctor, which is an amazing feeling. It is difficult to describe my feelings on passing my PhD. The final part of the PhD was so tremendously difficult, but completely worth it in the end.
I want to share what it is like working here in Holland, working for Nike and working in the world of textiles. I promise to blog more often…watch this space |

riding my bike.... |
|
Again!
Last week I went to Coed y Brenin in Wales and it was fantastic. Some guy was out riding with us who I had not met before, and on Sunday he fell off his bike (ahhh). When I asked him why he had fallen off he explained he was trying to keep up with me! I was going really fast - it was just so much fun.
I have finally warmed up though as it was terribly cold and rainy last weekend - I am all ready for a ride in a lovely place called Hope in the Peaks this weekend. Might put some tinsel on my bike and get into the Christmas spirit!

Eco friendly t-shirts... |
|
Being in the know about eco friendly textiles and fashion, you would think that sourcing some t-shirts for the noise team to wear would be a relatively easy job…its not as easy as it sounds
My options for type of fibre are:
Organic cotton – like conventional cotton but without nasty chemicals
Tencel fibre – made from wood pulp
Ingeo fibre – made from corn
I will keep you updated…

Final preparations plus lots of fun... |
|
I am currently trying to pull together final preparations to make the conference I have organised a great success. The conference will take place in Leeds on 16th November and its entitled Green Solutions and Sustainability in Textiles and Fashion. There are loads of exciting delegates and I am really looking forward to meeting up with them. I have been working really hard trying to write up my thesis at the same time. I am still finding time to fit in lots of exciting things too. Tomorrow night I am going to see my friend play in his band in Leeds, and this weekend I hope to be out riding my bike…again! |

six weeks in Austria...yipee! |
|
I am just preparing all my stuff to take to Austria. I am working out there for the next 6 weeks in a university in Dornbirn in the very eastern tip of Austria. They have some equipment that we don't have here so I can do some really good work for my PhD...Well, that is of course, if I don't get distracted by all those lovely mountains!
The work I am doing is looking at the electrokinetic potential over the surface of a fabric (Lyocell and cotton) to try and understand how a certain chemical (an antimicrobial) adsorbs on to it and how the potential changes at certain concentrations...it sounds really complicated but i am I under the impression that I just press a button and the machine does the work for me!
I am driving over there. It’s going to be a real road trip. Before I reach Austria I am stopping off in Morzine (France) for a few days to meet up with my friends. I must remember to pack my road map of Europe and some good music to listen to en route! I will update my blog on my return...have a nice summer!

Lunch with friends... |
|
I have just had lunch with my friend Katy. Her PhD requires her to do crazy exercises in a cold chamber as she logs her body temperature throughout the experiment. She is looking at thermal comfort in outdoor clothing, makes my experiments in the lab look like a walk in the park... |

Off to Cheltenham... |
|
I have just collected lots of cool textiles things from around the Textile Department here in Leeds. I even surprised myself looking at some of them! We can find textiles in lots different things we don’t even think about, like the cross bars for a bicycle, climbing helmet. I will bring the stuff I found down to Cheltenham so you guys can be surprised too! |

today is a good day... |
|
Today is a good day...even though I am really busy.
Being really busy beats being bored! I am going camping tonight with some friends so I am trying to get everything done so I can leave University on time. We are going to Ilkley Moor in Yorkshire. I really love mountain biking so I am super doper excited to go riding there tomorrow. Let’s hope the weather keeps nice and sunny...i am not happy with all the rain of late!
