Believe it or not a degree in analytical chemistry can put you in touch with the superstars. This is one and my students with her all time favourite actors. She too will agree that chemistry made all her dreams come true!

Strangely enough I had never really pictured myself as a forensic pathologist, but chemistry seems to be taking me into a whole new world these days.

On this forensic pathology trip I was able to get up close and personal with a corpse. The victim had drowned in a lake and we were fortunate enough to hear how physical evidence from the body is found and how conclusions are made about how exactly the victim died - was it accidental or  murder?

University of Huddersfield student cant quite make a break for it....

As you may have gathered the Forensic pathology trip is interesting for a number of reasons. Not only do we bear witness to full the autopsy but we even ended up on the film set rubbing shoulders with celebrities.

This is one of my students Ishrat Hussain who has been a big fan of Dominic Purcell (Lincoln Burrows, Prison Break) for many months now. After a failed trip to see the tomb of Dracula in picturesque Snagov, Romania, we were instead lucky enough to see where Dominic's new horror film, Town Creek, which is directed by Joel Schumacher. From the way Dominic is gripping Ishrat, looks like she might enjoy being imprisoned by Mr. Purcell!

I'd like the oozie 9MM.......

So, the forensic pathology trip was a success, in fact it was the best one in its brief five year history. Students were subjected to internal and external autopsy examinations, forensic serology and trace identification, visits to the police academy and criminalistics institute and much, much more! The trip was organised for chemistry students who specialise in forensic science. Its amazing how many people dont make the connection between forensic science and chemistry. Next year the trip will be far better and I have told them that.....I'll be back.....

Au revoir Mr. Blair

As Tony Blair steps down after over ten years in power, the world holds its breath as we wait for his next controversial move. The question is, will Tone take up Tim's offer of a science foundation degree course at the University of Huddersfield.....? They say a picture paints a thousand words....perhaps the big man only needs to say two in this case.......

14 May 2007 Forensic Science Trip 2007

....I am lucky enough to have a varied job which involves meeting important and inspiring people, working with young minds and lots of travel. In fact, next week I will be doing all three - I am taking 23 students on the University of Huddersfield's annual Forensic Pathology Trip 2007.....
